Hewlett-Packard regularly releases BIOS or firmware updates for its Pavilion line of desktop systems and recommends that users update the BIOS on machines if they encounter problems. In most cases, business users update their system’s firmware without any hassle. However, at this point, an interruption or poor update process may result in a bad BIOS chip. If the chip breaks down, the system usually does not boot at all, resulting in the need to replace the wrong chip.

Remove the defective BIOS chip

Locate the serial number and system information sticker on the back of the computer. Record the exact and complete model number of the computer – not the pavilion series number.

Disconnect the power cable, monitor cable, keyboard cable, mouse cable and any other connected cables or peripherals from the pavilion computer. Strengthen the computer and take it to a flatwork level.

Place the pavilion computer down on your side so that the left access panel faces upwards. Remove retaining screws or thumb screws at the back of the pavilion that secure the access panel. Slide the access panel from the computer side and set it aside.

Find the BIOS chip on the motherboard. Depending on your owner’s model pavilion computer, the motherboard can use one of three different BIOS chips: AMI, Awards or Phoenix. In most cases, the BIOS chip is rectangular or square and has a sticker with the BIOS manufacturer’s name pasted on it. Take note of the chip’s orientation – the way the label or logo encounters – so you know where to install the replacement.

Remove the chip from its socket with the chip puller tool if it is rectangular in shape. A chip extractor is similar to a small set of tongs that you use to serve food. Place points on either side of the BIOS chip, like the tongs of a chip-pulling device. Press on the device until the chip puller points grasp the outer edges of the BIOS chip. Slowly, but firmly, pull on the chip until it comes out of the socket. Alternatively, use a small flat head screwdriver or elgol to lightly polish and remove the chip.

Remove the sticker from the top of the BIOS chip. Remove any glue residue from the top of the chip so you can see the chip manufacturer and any models or lists. Record all labels and numbers listed at the top of the BIOS chip.

Order and install a new BIOS chip

Switch to another computer with an internet connection and open the web browser. Visit a site that sells alternative BIOS chips for most major manufacturer models. Sites such as BadFlash, BIOSMan, and BIOSFlash provide alternative chips for virtually every desktop computer and carry a full line of BIOS chips for HP Pavilion computers.
